Press release
The second European School Sport Day® is set to engage more than 1 million school children from at least 17 countries in inclusive physical activity initiatives this Friday, 30 September. The day is an official European Week of Sport event supported by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ Sport programme. Its goal is to promote physical activity and health on international level and involve as many children and young people, schools and organisations as possible.

European School Sport Day® is being organised by the Hungarian School Sport Federation in partnership with the International Culture and Sport Association (ISCA), the European Physical Education Association, Youth Sport Trust (United Kingdom), Fundacja V4 Sport (Poland), and BG BE Active Association (Bulgaria).

This year, the partners are building on their successful rollout of the Hungarian School Sport Federation’s National School Sport Day model to Bulgaria and Poland in 2015. They tested the day in the two new countries simultaneously with the event in Hungary last year as part of the NowWeMOVE campaign’s annual MOVE Week and the EU’s European Week of Sport. More than 300 schools in Bulgaria and 157 schools in Poland added to the 800 schools registered in Hungary.

In 2014, more than 200,000 children took part in the Hungarian edition when the event was expanded nationally to include more children with disabilities and disadvantaged backgrounds under ISCA’s MOVE Transfer programme.

All schools in Europe are invited to join in the day and make use of the free European School Sport Day® developed by the partners, who draw on extensive experience in working in school settings and with grassroots sport initiatives. Organisers are encouraged to register their events on the Hungarian School Sport Federation’s webpage http://www.essd.eu/registration/ and can download the toolkit and promotional materials at http://essd.nowwemove.com/

In August this year, the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) confirmed a formal registration of the event, granting a 10-year trademark for sport events, sport competitions and tournaments organised under the name of European School Sport Day®. The Hungarian School Sport Federation says this is an important step to ensuring the event’s continued expansion in the coming years.

“The consortium of partners, which was initially brought together by the Erasmus+ Sport programme of the European Commission, proud to achieve this milestone in the journey of developing European School Sport Day® into one of the most relevant school sport event in Europe.”

NowWeMOVE Campaign Manager for Europe, Laska Nenova (ISCA) says there has been widespread interest of the event among followers of the campaign.

“There has been a great uptake of European School Sport Day® on social media, with hundreds of school staff across Europe sharing our announcements and resources with their colleagues. The partners’ expertise has made the European School Sport Day resources an attractive way to promote the day and we are confident we will see a big increase in participation across Europe this year.”

About the NowWeMOVE campaign
NowWeMOVE is Europe’s largest bottom-up campaign of its kind promoting sport and physical activity. Launched in 2012 by ISCA, it brings stakeholders in the sport for all from a variety of sectors together to tackle the physical inactivity epidemic across Europe. The cross-sector vision of the campaign is to get “100 million more Europeans active in sport and physical activity by 2020.” The overall objectives of the campaign are to raise awareness of the benefits of sport and physical activity among European citizens; promote opportunities to be active in sport and physical activity; and enable sustainable and innovative capacity building for providers of physical activity initiatives through open-source solutions and advocacy.
