This year, ISCA and its European Fitness Day partners ukactive, BG BeActive, German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) and Sports Union of Slovenia set out to scale-up the successful UK National Fitness Day and roll it out across Europe. With fitness centres and clubs in 22 countries and over 180 cities offering European Fitness Day events on 15 September, the early signs are that this first test was a success.
Numbers are only one way of measuring success – personal experience is another. If you organised a European Fitness Day event, we invite you to share your thoughts on the very first edition. What was the impact of the event in your country?
Please help us measure it by completing our European Fitness Day survey – it only takes 5 minutes and it can pave the way for an even bigger and better European Fitness Day in 2017.
Our collaboration with four project partners working in fitness and physical activity promotion, including expert guidance from ukactive based on their experience with National Fitness Day, meant that we could develop a range of customised resources and promotional materials, which made it easy for event organisers to get involved.
The take-up of European Fitness Day around Europe – with particularly strong numbers in Germany and Spain – was a testament to this sharing of expertise.
Highlights on the day included Eurofitness in Spain combining the best of two worlds – the European Fitness Day and FlashMOVE – by getting fitness groups (including a seniors aquarobics class) to perform the official European Week of Sport flash mob in their workout sessions. Watch their video here
Fitness centres in the European Week of Sport opening ceremony’s host city, Kosice, also got into the spirit, organising special workout sessions for the day.
The National Fitness Day in the UK, held in conjunction with European Fitness Day, broke its own records with 17,000 events, which showcased the event’s potential to grow across Europe.
More fitness centres and clubs in Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Malta, Portugal and Slovenia shared their events on social media, and we look forward to reading the results of the survey to find out how other countries celebrated the day.
