In celebration of International Women’s Day, we recognise the incredible and inspirational work of Khalida Popal - a true role model for people around the world!

Khalida played a key role in the formation of Afghanistan’s women’s national football team in 2007 and became the first woman employed by the Afghanistan Football Federation. However, after facing numerous threats, she was forced to flee Afghanistan in 2012.

She eventually settled in Denmark, where she founded Girl Power Org - a non-profit grassroots organisation dedicated to empowering women and girls through sport and education.

Today, Girl Power is active across Europe and the Middle East, fostering an inclusive community and providing meaningful opportunities for girls and women from diverse cultures and backgrounds to connect through sport.

For several years, Girl Power Org has participated in the European Week of Sport Denmark hosting impactful and inclusive events.

Last year’s activities took place at Avnstrup Refugee Centre, where more than 50 participants celebrated the power of movement over two days of sports, dance, and recreational activities.

The work of Khalida Popal and Girl Power Org is truly remarkable and continues to inspire change!
