ESSD finds its pre-pandemic momentum!
20/12/2024
In 2024, the European School Sport Day (ESSD) proved that education and sports are the ultimate dream team for making a difference! The latest numbers for 2024 show an exciting increase in the number of schools and participants getting involved, fueling an initiative that’s all about action, energy, and teamwork across Europe. This year, “Education through Movement” took the main stage, encouraging schools to integrate physical activity into learning for a healthier, more dynamic approach to education.
2024 is not only special because we have reached the pre-pandemic momentum but also because it marked a special milestone as ESSD celebrates its 10th anniversary, a decade of inspiring schools and communities to get ON THE MOVE and make a difference.
ESSD is on fire! In 2022, 13.631 schools joined the fun. However, there was a slight setback in 2023, with “only” 11.250 schools on board. Fast-forward to 2024, and a jaw-dropping 14.267 schools participated in the action. This increase in participation shows just how much schools love the chance to embrace sport and sustainability while inspiring students to dream big.
And it’s not just the schools—participants are turning up in record numbers, too. From 2.574.681 participants in 2022, the count has now smashed through the three-million mark with 3.223.306 participants in 2024. That’s more than three million moments of teamwork, determination, and pure fun!

So, why is ESSD growing so fast? The key lies in its collaborations, as teaming up with regional and national organisations has enabled ESSD to reach more schools and communities than ever. Tailored programs ensure that everyone—from the physically active kids to the more sedentary—feels included and excited to join in.
2024 marked a peak of strategic partnerships in some of the participating countries (Poland and Bulgaria) that demonstrated how these partnerships had been instrumental in driving the success and growth of ESSD. Collaboration between regional organisations, educational institutions, and local governments strengthened the initiative's reach and impact. National funding support has been a real game-changer, allowing ESSD to scale up and spread the energy far and wide. For example, this strategic partnership of V4Sport has allowed for the smooth sharing of best practices and resources, enhancing their outreach efforts effectively nationwide.
The numbers clearly show that the buzz around ESSD is only growing. The possibilities are endless, with more schools and participants getting involved each year. ESSD is set to bring even more schools and students into the fold, roll out fresh, interactive programs to keep the energy high and focus on inclusivity to ensure that every community gets a chance to participate and feel involved. Through this year’s focus topic, “Education through Movement,” ESSD aimed to make active learning a regular part of the school day, proving that physical activity isn’t just good for the body—it’s great for the mind, too.
If you’ve ever wanted to be part of something big, now’s your chance. ESSD is calling on schools, students, teachers, and community leaders to join the movement. Let’s keep the momentum going, one game, one activity, and one epic event at a time!
