18/09/2024
On September 23, 2024, the European Week of Sport (EWOS) will kick off with a spectacular opening ceremony at the National Athletics Center in Budapest, Hungary. This much-anticipated event promises to bring together sports enthusiasts, families, and dignitaries for an evening that celebrates community, health, and European unity.
Venue and Participants
The opening ceremony will be hosted at the prestigious National Athletics Center, a venue well-known for its recent role in the 2023 World Athletics Championships. The event is set to attract approximately 3,000 participants for the highlight of the evening, the LED's Run, a night run event featuring two courses of 2 km and 5 km. This unique experience combines the thrill of running with the excitement of light displays, making it a fun and engaging event for both children and adults. In addition to the general participants, the ceremony will be attended by around 250 protocol guests who will have the opportunity to watch the festivities from the VIP lounge and terrace.
The LED's Run: A Community Event for All Ages
The LED's Run has quickly become a signature event of the European Sports Week. Introduced in 2023, this light-infused night run encourages community participation and fitness. Participants of all ages are welcome, with special arrangements made for children’s participation. The run serves as an inclusive activity, promoting the core values of EWOS: making sport accessible, enjoyable, and an integral part of European culture.
Performances to Inspire
The opening ceremony will feature a series of artistic performances designed to symbolise unity and cultural diversity across Europe. A flag dance show will kick off the evening, where 27 dancers will perform a choreographed routine with the flags of the 27 EU member states. This dynamic performance will take place along the athletics track, in front of the VIP audience, before culminating in a powerful display on stage, representing cooperation and harmony across Europe.
A modern take on Hungarian folk dance will serve as the closing performance, adding a local cultural flavour to the festivities while maintaining a contemporary style that resonates with the diverse audience.
A Night to Remember
In addition to the LED's Run and performances, the event will feature opening speeches by prominent figures, celebrating the European spirit of cooperation and physical well-being. The night will conclude with a gala dinner in the VIP lounge, providing an opportunity for guests to reflect on the evening's events and the shared values of sport and community.
The 2024 European Week of Sport opening ceremony is poised to be a memorable event, combining sport, culture, and entertainment in a way that inspires both participants and spectators alike. With its focus on community engagement and promoting physical activity, the event embodies the spirit of EWOS, encouraging a healthier, more active Europe.
This is more than just an opening ceremony—it’s a celebration of unity through sport.
