Virtual reality sports Interaction Between European Schools (VIBES) is an Erasmus+ Sport project, led by Vrije Universiteit Brussel in partnership with several other organisations. The main aim of the initiative is to transform Physical Education (PE) by incorporating Virtual Reality (VR), making classes more dynamic, inclusive, and engaging. As an associate partner, ISCA is proud to be part of this initiative, which aims to equip PE teachers across Europe with the skills to effectively use VR in their classrooms.

Launched in 2024 with a kickoff meeting in Brussels, the project began with strategic planning and team-building activities that explored innovative applications of VR. Both local and international focus groups revealed VR’s potential to create adaptive learning environments, especially benefiting students with disabilities and introducing non-traditional sports into PE. These focus groups were instrumental in shaping how VR can be integrated into PE.

Locally, consortium partners engaged with PE teachers, educational staff, and experts to gather insights on their needs and expectations regarding VR. Internationally, ISCA collaborated with UCLan Cyprus and INQUIRIUM to host a virtual ecosystem forum, where 18 participants from 13 countries shared their views on how VR can enhance inclusivity in PE. The discussions highlighted VR’s capacity to introduce innovative sports, creating more adaptive and engaging PE experiences across Europe. These inputs are now being used to develop a customised training framework for PE teachers, which includes the creation of training materials, an e-platform, and pilot strategies.

One of the project’s key achievements is the release of the Consolidated Report on the Framework for Training Physical Education Teachers in Virtual Reality. This comprehensive guide provides valuable insights into VR technologies, field research, and practical strategies for integrating VR into PE lessons, helping to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior in schools. The VIBES project is paving the way for a new era in physical education, and we encourage you to follow its progress on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn.
