Movement has no age limit: GUM pilot in Bulgaria connects generations through physical activity

We are excited to showcase the inspiring success of the Generations United Movement (GUM) pilot project in Bulgaria, which has been bringing together generations through the power of movement. Led by Spituana Necheva, a devoted nutritionist and project coordinator, this initiative has united seniors and younger participants at a pensioners' club in Markovo, promoting both physical well-being and a sense of community through gentle exercise and health education.

The GUM pilot in Markovo, initially designed to last one month, focuses on creating safe and effective physical activities tailored to the unique needs of elderly participants. The exercises, designed to be both therapeutic and rehabilitative, are performed in a seated position to ensure safety, especially for those with balance concerns. The slow, controlled movements engage the joints and muscles without the risk of sudden strain, allowing participants to exercise with confidence and ease.

As the pilot activity nears its conclusion, it is clear that the benefits extend far beyond physical health. Many participants report feeling more energetic and mobile. “I move my legs better,” one senior remarked, reflecting on how the exercises have enhanced her mobility. The GUM project has also sparked meaningful discussions about health, with one participant sharing, "It’s not just the movement; it’s about being informed and discussing these important health topics together."

This project echoes the success of other GUM pilots, such as the one in Nice, France, where intergenerational activities have brought seniors and young volunteers together. Both pilot initiatives highlight the powerful role movement can play in connecting people across generations. Through shared physical activities, participants not only improve their health but also form relationships that combat loneliness and foster a sense of belonging.

In Markovo, the pilot has been met with such enthusiasm that organisers are exploring ways to extend it beyond its initial phase. The excitement from participants underscores the impact of intergenerational engagement and the importance of staying active as we age. As one senior wisely noted, “Movement means health. The more we move, the slower we will age.”

This GUM pilot in Bulgaria serves as a powerful reminder that movement transcends age. Whether young or old, staying active is essential for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. By uniting seniors through exercise, the project in Markovo has shown that movement not only strengthens our bodies but also deepens our connections with others. As the participants in this pilot demonstrate, there is no age limit to the benefits of staying active and staying connected.
