We are delighted to announce the successful launch of the SIMPAL Project, a pioneering initiative designed to support the integration of Ukrainian refugee children into Polish schools through the power of Physically Active Learning. This innovative approach, which merges education, physical activity, and play, will not only help these children overcome language barriers but also equip them with essential tools to cope with the trauma of displacement.

The SIMPAL Project, which was launched at a meeting in Copenhagen last week, brings together the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) and the Krokiet and Lama Academy – two seasoned partners with extensive experience in using sport to aid the integration of refugees.

At the core of the SIMPAL Project is the concept of Physically Active Learning, a method pioneered by the Krokiet and Lama Academy in Poland. This approach reimagines traditional classroom learning by incorporating physical activities into educational content. Instead of sitting at desks, children participate in dynamic, movement-based lessons that not only enhance their academic skills but also promote physical health and emotional resilience.

For Ukrainian children who have recently arrived in Poland, this approach is particularly valuable. The challenges of adapting to a new country, learning a new language, and processing the trauma of war can be overwhelming. Physically Active Learning creates a supportive environment where these children can express themselves, build confidence, and form friendships—all while remaining active and engaged in their education.

The Krokiet and Lama Academy has already made significant progress in developing digital educational tools aligned with the Polish core curriculum. Now, with the support of the SIMPAL Project, these resources will be expanded and enhanced to include sport-specific methodologies, approaches, and activities. This will enable the Academy to harness the unique benefits of sports in promoting inclusion and trauma-sensitive education.

The SIMPAL Project also highlights the role of movement as a universal language that can bridge cultural divides and foster inclusion. By embedding sport-specific methodologies into the curriculum, we aim to create a holistic learning experience that addresses both the educational and emotional needs of refugee children.

As we advance the SIMPAL Project, we are committed to documenting its impact and sharing our findings with the wider community. Our goal is to create and disseminate a scalable model that can be replicated across Europe, helping refugee children everywhere find a sense of belonging and hope through Physically Active Learning.

Stay tuned for more updates as we work together to make a positive difference in the lives of Ukrainian children and their Polish peers.
